On September 30, 2025, at 9:59 p.m. local time, a devastating magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Northern Cebu, particularly in Bogo City, San Remigio, Medellin, Tabogon, Tabuelan, and Daanbantayan.
The earthquake left serious damage to vital infrastructures (87) and properties such as homes (597), schools, churches, healthcare facilities and public buildings. Landslides were recorded in the most vulnerable areas. Roads and bridges were destroyed, isolating communities and delaying rescue efforts. The human toll scores 72 confirmed deaths, more than 200 people injured, and over 170,000 individuals have been impacted, including 20,000 displaced, many of whom are camped outside their damaged homes or in open spaces as aftershocks continue.
Immediately after the earthquake, secondary crises are evident. Hospitals were overwhelmed with trauma cases; some patients treated outdoors due to unsafe buildings. Damaged reservoirs and pipelines led to severe water shortages and risks of disease outbreaks. Power and communication outages left communities cut off and fearful amid continuous aftershocks. Survivors, especially children, show signs of distress and need mental health support.
Government and humanitarian agencies rapidly mobilized, but access, resource shortages, and unmet basic needs persist. Many families still lack food, water, shelter, medical care, and sanitation.

CADIS and VPHCS in the field with the Daughters of St. Camillus
The Visayas Primary Healthcare Services, Inc. (VPHCS) has implemented several projects to build community-based health programs (CBHPs) in partnership with people’s organizations in several parts of Cebu and Bohol. Thus, after the earthquake, the leaders of the people’s organizations quickly contacted VPHCS’ office and appealed to us for relief and humanitarian assistance. The emergency request was immediately accepted by the Daughters of St. Camillus (FdSC) present in the area, who promptly contacted CADIS to organise the emergency response and assistance to the affected population.
An emergency intervention program has been designed to provide initial relief to an initial number of 3,133 severely affected families (farmers, fisherfolk, rural workers) in Bogo, Daanbantayan, and Medellin. The aim is to mitigate suffering, prevent further loss of life, and support early recovery. Food packs for one week, supply of safe drinking water, hygiene kits, and containers good for one week will be distributed. Basic medicines, first aid kits, temporary shelter and psychosocial support to help survivors cope with trauma will be also provided by the team.

Your support to the Emergency Fund can help us prepare the rapid emergency response for the distribution of emergency kits.
