In the following weeks, it became clear that the emergency intervention would only partially alleviate the human, material, and psychological damage. A more sustained and incisive intervention was therefore necessary, implemented through collaboration with the Tzu Chi Buddhist Charity Foundation, a CADIS partner in other projects as well (response to the Covid-19 emergency and the Ukrainian emergency), which will fund the intervention.
Project partners, together with the Tzu Chi Foundation, are the Diocese of Hyderabad, the Camillians, and the Lay Camillian Family. The partnership will enable important results for the population affected by the flood.
The local partners who will collaborate in the implementation of the project are the parish priest, catechists, the San Francesco Youth Group (local people), and the Daughters of the Holy Cross (religious sisters).
The intervention area will focus on the parish of San Francesco, located in the Nawabshah district, and will assist 33,000 people. The population of Nawabshah is 220,283 inhabitants in 2022. Floods are among the most catastrophic and common natural events. They not only endanger human lives, livelihoods, and property, but also devastate the country's economy. The increase in floods is an inevitable consequence of climate change. Pakistan received over 60% of the average monsoon rainfall in just three weeks from the start of the monsoon season in July 2022.
Since the population was living below the poverty line, with this flood they lost everything: property, livestock, etc. The floodwaters invaded their villages and swallowed up their properties.
Belonging to a faith different from the majority is another battle that must be faced in Pakistan. People who belong to different religious traditions have been discriminated against. They not only suffer from the loss of their material goods, but also experience mental and spiritual agony in this cruel situation. In this scenario, they need material help and special attention to the psychospiritual well-being of these victims.
The general objective of the project is to bring the merciful love of God in Christ and alleviate the suffering caused by the 2022 floods.
The specific objectives of the project are:
1. Provide food supplies for one month.
2. Provide medicines and drugs for ordinary illnesses and individual injuries.
3. In case of emergency, respond to serious illnesses through hospitalization and treatment.
4. Provide mosquito nets and blankets.
The project aims to distribute 4,500 relief packages (food, non-food items such as quilts, hygiene kits for men, women, and children). The packages are sufficient for one month's supply to families. The average family size in Pakistan is 5-6 people; therefore, about 27,000 people, including children, will be helped.
27,000 (4,500 families) will receive relief packages - food, hygiene supplies, winter kits.
2,000 people will receive medical assistance
2,000 people will receive blankets
2,000 people will receive mosquito nets
The Lay Camillian Family already has a track record of disaster response during the earthquake and floods of past years. We have already started collecting data to learn about the basic needs of the flood victims, so that we can provide them with essential goods, hygiene kits, and health kits for women.
