For 13 years, CADIS has been remembering those who lost their lives, supporting survivors and honouring its volunteers who courageously chose to accompany victims on the difficult journey towards hope and recovery. This year, our guiding theme is: ‘Upholding Dignity, Building Resilience: Our Sacred Commitment to the Vulnerable.’
During the Eucharistic celebration yesterday, Sunday 12 October, at the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Rome, Fr Aris Miranda, MI, CADIS Director, together with the Superior General Fr Pedro Tramontin, MI, reminded us that beyond the data and numbers, there are thousands of unheard people, stories and voices, especially in the most vulnerable and remote areas, who are experiencing the most severe impact of natural disasters and climate change.
“It is for this reason that we gather today to pray for and honour the victims and survivors of disasters, as well as those who have helped them on their journey of recovery. We pray that they need strength, courage and hope, but above all we pray that they continue to be our evangelisers and that through them we fulfil our vocation as true servants of the Lord. Pope Leo XIV writes (Dilexi Te, paras. 102-109) that the poor are not only objects of charity, but also evangelisers who can move us to conversion through their example of weakness and reliance on God. The poor can act as silent teachers for us, making us aware of our own conceit and instilling in us a proper spirit of humility. The poor remind us how uncertain and empty our seemingly safe and secure lives can be.”
