CADIS Thailand's groundbreaking efforts in bringing hope to Myanmar's most vulnerable people

From 21 to 23 of April, CADIS Thailand began the first delivery of relief goods (food and non-food) to the earthquake-affected people of Ban Klang, Mae Jae District, Roi Koh Province, Myanmar.  The team has distributed 350 packs of relief goods (instant noodles, canned goods, cooking oil, basic medicines) and 100 bags of rice. 

It took several hours of travel by car from the Thailand border to the target area of Ban Klang which is a mountainous region. 

Ban Klang has a population of approximately 5,000 people representing various ethnic groups, including the Shan, Karen, and Burmese. Historically, there have been frequent clashes between ethnic groups and military forces in this area. Residents have often been impacted by the ongoing civil war of the revolutionary group and the military junta government. When the armed conflict erupted in 2003, with Burmese soldiers invading and looting properties, many villagers fled into Thailand. Temporary shelters were set up along the Thai side. CADIS Thailand provided assistance and food to the population.

Originally, the target group/s are survivors of the recent earthquake who fled to this place. However, the team has also encountered refugees from the ethnic minority groups fleeing from civil unrest. Most of them have experienced multiple displacements and are continuously seeking long-term stability and peace.

Already familiar with the area, CADIS Thailand immediately focused on the emergency initiative.

Approximately 200 families belonging to ethnic groups such as the Karen, Shan, and Burmese received the support. 

The team, composed of fourteen (14) Camillians and volunteers, after the operation, made an assessment of the community's pressing needs, experience and feeling after the earthquake.

What emerged is a strong feeling of insecurity and homelessness caused by the earthquake, fear and constant preparedness to evacuate and seek safety.

They actually feel a strong desire for food and peace, waiting for assistance and support since that area is hardly reached by humanitarian aid. 

CADIS Thailand has collaborated with key government agencies and civil society organizations such as Caritas Thailand, Social Ministry of Chiang Mai Diocese, Cooperation Thailand (COERR), International Rescue Committee and the Christian organization from Singapore. 

CADIS is still organising further missions, in particular to deliver additional emergency equipment and provision of solar panels or other sources of electricity as the area currently lacks electricity. A medical team from India is also waiting for the green signal of the government of Myanmar.
