Healing hands, resilient communities: introducing CADIS Brasil and the expansion of a global humanitarian family

CADIS has officially welcomed a vital new member into its humanitarian family: CADIS Brasil.

The global network of the Camillian Disaster Service International (CADIS) has officially welcomed a vital new member into its humanitarian family: CADIS Brasil. Grounded in a centuries-old heritage of care and driven by a contemporary vision of integral ecology and emergency response, CADIS Brasil marks a major milestone in the restructuring of the Camillian Mission. It opens up dynamic new channels for international collaboration, strategic partnerships, and sustainable community development.

A legacy of mercy built on modern foundations

While CADIS Brasil is entering a new phase targeting full financial and operational autonomy, it draws deep inspiration from a historical tradition. The organization is inspired by the heroic commitment of the Camillian Martyrs of Charity, who during the 16th to 18th centuries provided comprehensive corporal and spiritual care to the sick during severe plagues, epidemics, and wars in Italy and Hungary.

Between 2021 and 2024, the reconfiguration of the Brazilian Camillian Mission in the Amazon region set the stage for expanding its humanitarian footprint.

Core pillars: the permanent projects of CADIS Brasil

CADIS Brasil does not just wait for crises to strike; it operates ongoing, structural lines of action aimed at strengthening vulnerable populations across the country:

  • The Amazon River Outreach (Foz do Amazonas): Operating in the states of Amapá and northern Pará, this life-promoting initiative serves vulnerable riverside (ribeirinhas) communities. Mobile teams deliver comprehensive healthcare services—including medical consultations, oral healthcare, Pap smear screenings—alongside vital spiritual care. Intensive outreach waves are also conducted in January and July with the active involvement of volunteer students.
  • The Solidarity Outreach (Fortaleza, Ceará): Held at the Saint Camillus Seminary in Fortaleza, this major community mobilization delivers integral healthcare . Vulnerable families receive medical and dental checkups, legal assistance, haircuts, recreational activities for children, and essential food baskets.
  • The Laudato Si’ Project (Integral Ecology): Rooted in the call to protect our "Common Home," this program bridges Camillian spirituality with environmental action.

Strategic horizons: the green and professional transition

As CADIS Brasil looks to the future, it is actively implementing some structural transformations designed to scale its impact and maximize efficiency, such as:

  • 100% Clean Energy (ESG Commitment): Moving away from uncertified, fragmented energy sources, CADIS Brasil is transitioning all institutions under the Camillian umbrella to 100% clean energy. This milestone aims to drastically reduce carbon footprints and achieve recognized institutional ESG certifications.

A structured framework for crisis response

In alignment with CADIS International, CADIS Brasil intends to operate under strict, optimized emergency protocols designed for both localized and distant incidents. Whether a disaster occurs near or far from Camillian facilities, a rigorous operational chain is activated:

Crisis -> CADIS Crisis Committee -> Solidarity Communication Protocol -> Liaison Networks -> Local Humanitarian Response & Resource Mobilization

This structural predictability ensures that international aid, localized intelligence, and volunteer forces are deployed with maximum speed and zero waste.

Opportunities for collaboration: join the mission

The birth of CADIS Brasil expands the horizons of the global Camillian family, positioning its projects as a catalyst for promoting religious vocations, employee identity, and lay professional engagement. It offers a fertile ground for diverse international collaborations:

  • Corporate and Philanthropic Partnerships: With the dedicated fundraising, international donors, NGOs, and corporate partners can co-fund permanent medical and environmental projects with clear metrics, transparent governance, and measurable ESG impact.
  • Academic and Voluntourism Alliances: Universities and medical institutions can partner with CADIS Brasil to participate in the intensive January and July healthcare expeditions to the Amazon River, offering students an unparalleled, life-changing field experience.
  • Ecological and Network Collaborations: Environmental organizations can integrate into the Laudato Si’ network, sharing technologies, waste-management practices, and sustainable development methodologies to help scale community actions across Brazilian states.

By bridging a centuries-old charism of health and mercy with professionalized management and an unyielding commitment to vulnerable populations, CADIS Brasil stands ready to work hand-in-hand with global stakeholders. Together, we can build a healthier, more resilient world.
