Two teams from Thailand reach Myanmar earthquake survivors for second emergency mission

CADIS and Caritas Thailand joined forces for their second relief mission on May 29-30, 2025

In response to the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, CADIS and Caritas Thailand joined forces for their second relief mission on May 29-30, 2025.

The diocesan Caritas of Chiang Mai, Caritas Thailand, and CADIS Thailand organized a new mission to assist our brothers and sisters in Myanmar who were affected by the earthquake and ongoing unrest. After preparing packages with medicines, mosquito nets, blankets, and food, two teams set out.

The team was made up of 7 members from the main organization and another 10 members from Mae Hong Son, representing the social department of the Diocese of Chiang Mai.

The first group consisted of Fr. Pairat, Fr. Wirote, the CARITAS social team from the Diocese of Chiang Mai, and CADIS volunteers. They traveled to Khun Yam, passing through the Huai Ton Nun checkpoint, to their destination at Mae Jae, in the Roi Ko district of Myanmar.

The team provided assistance to 300 families displaced by civil unrest and the earthquake, delivering survival kits and essential supplies.

The second group, made up of Fr. Ning, Fr. Tiger, and volunteers from Phu Thong and Achu, took a boat from Samlab to reach the Gotule area in Myanmar and visited three locations: Umee Tha - a hospital and a nursing school; Tagay Tha - a village of 15 families displaced by disasters and conflict; and Imtu Tha - a refugee camp with about 300 families and children.

During the first visit to Umee Tha, the team delivered 100 medical supply kits to support ongoing healthcare operations and the treatment of earthquake victims. Additional supplies were provided to help medical staff continue their essential work under difficult conditions.

The second distribution at Tagay Tha consisted of rice, dry food, mosquito nets, flashlights, medicines, and tarpaulins for roof covering to help families survive in their temporary shelters. Here, families live in extremely difficult conditions, using natural cave formations as shelter, without electricity and without basic necessities.

The third distribution took place at Im-Tu-Ta, an evacuation camp hosting 300 families who fled from earthquake damage and conflict zones. Special attention was given to visiting the children's dormitories to provide medicines and basic necessities.

In each location, volunteers had to travel by boat, taking about 20-30 minutes, rowing upstream on the vast Salween River, surrounded by breathtaking nature. Both teams faced considerable transportation difficulties to reach the affected communities. The journey required crossing pristine but challenging natural landscapes. After disembarking, further travel on foot was often necessary to reach inland communities.

They observed that life in these villages is extremely difficult: no electricity, scarce food, limited supplies, and many hardships. In addition, many families live in temporary or damaged structures.

What was distributed during the second mission?

Survival kits

300 kits containing rice, dry food, medicines, and basic necessities to needy families in various locations.

Medical supplies

Medicines and medical supplies were provided both to individual families and to healthcare facilities, helping to address immediate health problems after the earthquake.

Shelter materials

Mosquito nets, blankets, and tarpaulins were distributed to help families create safer living environments, particularly important for those living in temporary or damaged shelters.

Thanks to the support of generous donors and institutions, it was possible to carry out the relief operations. The need remains high and in the coming months, recovery and building resilience will be the main concerns, not to mention the psychological impact of this event. CADIS will continue to assist survivors thanks to your support and prayers.
