The testimony of the survivors of the floods in Kenya assisted by CADIS

CADIS International and CADIS Kenya, thanks to the support of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Charity Foundation (BTCCF) of Taiwan, which funds the project, are committed to assisting the population affected by the severe floods in Kenya.

The project operates in the Mukuru and Mathare slums in Nairobi and in Baringo County.

Over the months, volunteers and field workers have collected the testimonies of several residents affected by the phenomenon. Through a series of videos, which we have gathered here, we wanted to share their voices. Thanks to their words, we have been able to make rescue and recovery activities more efficient and the results more effective. Let's discover their stories together:

Rose Tiyana, a resident of Eldume, had to face a serious setback when her 5-acre farm was completely swept away, threatening her main source of livelihood. The agricultural project has given Mrs. Tiyana new hope. She expects to earn enough money from selling tomatoes to meet her family's needs and restore her ability to provide for them. This has become crucial for her and for other farmers in the region.

Mr. Samson Omondi is also one of the flood victims. His house in the Mathare slum in Nairobi was violently hit, as the water destroyed everything and forced him to flee. Thanks to the intervention of CADIS, together with many others, Samson was assisted with basic necessities, aid, and temporary shelter.

In the locality of Eldume, we met Mr. Joseph Sauroki, a middle-aged man visibly weak due to an accident that occurred almost ten years ago. Affected by the floods, Mr. Sauroki's life improved after CADIS Kenya built a semi-permanent house for him in the complex, a house that for him symbolically means home and family reunion. For the first time in many years, Joseph and his family have a shelter that protects them from rain, mosquitoes, and other extreme conditions.

Mrs. Winnie, a resident of one of the most affected areas of Nairobi, after the flood that hit her home, received primary assistance, food for a month, as well as essential items such as a mattress, blankets, and a net to protect herself from mosquitoes. Before CADIS arrived, many were forced to sleep on the floor in precarious conditions, including the youngest children and the elderly. Furthermore, thanks to the financial support provided by the project, beneficiaries like Winnie can hope to return to normal soon and move back into their homes.
