"Promoting the strengths and economic resilience of single mothers' families in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro" is the CADIS post-COVID project in Tanzania aimed at promoting the strengths and economic resilience of single-parent families in the two cities of Dar es Salaam and Morogoro.
The pandemic has affected the most vulnerable groups in society, especially the elderly, women, and children. Among women, single mothers in the informal sector and self-employed workers were the most affected, as they struggled alone to care for their children without income during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The beneficiaries of the project are 100 young people and 40 single mothers (30 in Temeke and Ilala - Dar es Salaam region, and 10 in Mikese and Ifakara - Morogoro region). The program aims to build their capacity to recover quickly from the difficulties encountered during the Covid-19 pandemic and also to empower young people so that they do not fall into the poverty trap.
The project, promoted by CADIS International and CADIS Tanzania, of the Camillian Delegation in Tanzania, started in 2021 and will last 24 months. The main objective is to reduce poverty among 40 single-parent families. This can be achieved by teaching them the skills to start rice cultivation and pig farming activities to generate income and manage finances; strengthening the institution of marriage and empowering young people through seminars on peer pressure and relationships.
The expected results to be achieved are an increase in family income among single mothers, an increase in business and financial management skills and peer relationship skills, and an improvement in the standard of living.
The project includes various activities such as capacity building courses, training sessions, and seminars for single mothers following a participatory approach suitable for them to improve or develop their skills and make them independent in starting their own business.
The project leadership group, the Project Board, is responsible for project management; monitoring and supervision of the implementation of project activities will be conducted regularly to ensure the achievement of objectives.
The project team has already finalized the list of beneficiaries. They visited several villages and selected the most suitable land for the single mothers' farming activity. After extensive research and meticulous observations, a plot of land in the village of Idete of 100 acres was selected, made available for rent by a farmer. To facilitate project management and the implementation of activities, all necessary equipment has been purchased, such as a photocopier, printing machine, computer, tablet, projector, and an audio system for training sessions. In addition, a series of training courses has been scheduled to start the learning process for the beneficiaries.
