Destroyed houses, collapsed bridges and entire villages completely submerged by water and mud, are some of the consequences of the devastating tsunami that hit Indonesia last Friday 28 September 2018, after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The most serious damage occurred in Palu on the island of Sulawesi where as high as 6 meters waves flooded the buildings and roads.

Since 3 October 2018, the death toll is now 1,374, 113 missing and hundreds seriously injured, according to Indonesia's national disaster agency. There are more than 60,000 displaced people staying in over 200 sites. These figures are expected to rise in the coming days as rescue operations are ongoing. First-aid is being delivered, however, some areas remain inaccessible due to landslides and damaged infrastructure. According to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), basic needs include food, shelter materials, fuel and generators, clean water and medical assistance. The Indonesian government has welcomed offers of international assistance in line with humanitarian needs.

The Camillians in Maumere are keeping in touch with the situation particularly with the Diocese of Manado’s Commission on Economics and Social Action who is leading the Catholic Church’s humanitarian response. On October 4, Fr. Andi Suparman will be traveling to Manado to get in touch with this Commission and to initiate our collaboration with them.
