I am in Palu right now. This morning I visited some locations where the earthquake left great destruction.

There are three locations where the ground experience liquefaction. “Soil liquefaction occurs when a saturated or partially saturated soil substantially loses strength and stiffness in response to an applied stress such as shaking during an earthquake or other sudden change in stress condition, in which material that is ordinarily a solid behaves like a liquid.” (Cf. Wikipedia).

Petobo that I visited yesterday was one of the villages affected by the liquefaction. Petobo is a village of more than 700 families. When the liquification took place, the mud and water came out from the surface of the ground. The ground was stirred and slowly quacking; then all of sudde... ...

According to the Government, over 24,000 families are affected by these floods thus far. With the water levels in the Mekong River and its tributaries due to rise over the coming weeks, the situation is likely to deteriorate and flooding may spread farther.

Over five billion cubic meters of water, equal to two million Olympic swimming pools, inundated an estimated 55,000 hectares of land covering it with mud and sludge.

On June 13, 2018, northeast India in the states of Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are once again submerged with water due to heavy torrential rain affecting more than 650.000 population in 921 villages in 21 districts. The flooding itself is primarily caused by breaches in Assam’s embankments which are reportedly in dire need of reinforcement. But the construction of many dams and rampant encroachment of river banks and wetlands, besides a lack of proper drainage, make things worse.

As of today, government data recorded 12 deaths in the states of Assam (5), and Manipur (7). The death is due to flood and landslide. In Assam, the worst affected districts are Karimganj, Hailakandi, Cachar, Karbi Anglong and Golaghat. In Assam alone, the total population affected is 448.495... ...

Dear Confreres and Friends,

On February 2, 1994, the Order of the Ministers of the Sick (Camillians) had officially instituted May 25 as the Day of the Camillian Religious Martyrs of Charity. The day also commemorates the birth of St. Camillus de Lellis.

The Day of the Camillian Religious Martyrs of Charity is a commemoration of the more than 300 Camillians (seminarians, oblates, novices, brothers and priests) who died in serving the victims of plagues in Italy, Spain, Hungary and Croatia during the first four centuries of the life of the Order. This is an exemplary witnessing of the “fourth vow of the Camillians,” that is, service to the sick even at the risk of one’s life.
